With the admission season at its peak, Indian government has reportedly opened scholarships for the upcoming academic session (2019-20) allowing Indian expats to pursue higher education in their native country.

The Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) was rolled out by the Ministry of External Affairs(MEA) for the Indian-origin students for admissions to premier Indian institutions including National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs), and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs). According to the programme, the scholarship is extended to students from up to 66 countries — including the US and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The scheme will benefit students with nearly 75% financial assistance on the total cost of the academic course — which accounts for $4000 (₹277,002) worth of scholarship every year. The applicants can enroll for the scholarship scheme via the e-governance mechanism spdcindia.gov.in.

This includes courses in engineering, technology, management, journalism, animal husbandry, liberal arts, and commerce among others.

Introduced in 2006-07, the programme is aimed at making higher education in Indian Universities available to the children of overseas Indians and Non- resident Indian students (NRIs).

Since its inception, the Indian government has awarded over 800 scholarships to students, according to Ministry of External Affairs.

Separately, in a bid to promote India abroad, in 2019, the Modi government raised the scholarship amount to ₹25,000 a month for boys and ₹3,000 for girls under the ‘Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme’ as it enters its second term in India.
