The Indian market seems to be doing more harm than good to Amazon
. The e-commerce giant's international losses have swelled to $936 million into the third quarter due to the company’s aggressive push in India.
This figure is almost double of $541 million losses Amazon incurred in the September quarter of 2016. India, however, continues to be the main focus for the company internationally. Amazon recently launched the Echo and Alexa
devices, and the first Prime Day in India.
In response to what was driving international losses, CFO Brian Olsavsky said -"It is international expansion and primarily in India where we're continuing to add benefits. And we launched Prime there a year ago, if you remember, and we've had more Prime members join in India than in any other country in the first 12 months. We have free shipping on 10 million items there and we're continuing to add benefits; Prime Video, Amazon Family."
"We had the first Prime Day there this year, Prime Music, Amazon Business
is also expanding in India. So, a lot of positive momentum and investment going on in India, very pleased with that. We also recently announced Echo and Alexa are available in India. So that should be well received by the Indian consumer base," he added.
In the last month, Amazon has launched five new Alexa-enabled devices, introduced Alexa in India, announced integration with BMW, surpassed 25,000 skills, integrated Alexa with Sonos speakers, taught Alexa to distinguish between two voices, and more.
Despite the rising losses, Amazon remains unfazed and is looking to continue its aggressive push in the Indian market.
