Instagram's two cofounders are leaving

Instagram's cofounders are leaving the company, according to a report from The New York Times.

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger together founded the photo-sharing app in 2010, which Facebook acquired for $1 billion in 2012. It now has more than one billion active users.

The news comes following months of turmoil and scandals for Facebook, from Cambridge Analytica's misappropriation of tens of millions of Facebok users' data to sustained fallout from the spread of Russian propaganda during the 2016 election.

It's not clear why Systrom and Krieger are leaving, and a spokesperson for Instagram did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment. The NYT reported that the pair will leave in the "coming weeks," and will take some time off after their departure.
