Japan stresses on India’s NSG membership to promote non-proliferation

Even as China remains stagnant on its opposition for India's entry into the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Japan has once again stressed that India’s entry into NSG is required for promoting non-proliferation.
Yasuhisa Kawamura, the Director-General of Press and Public Diplomacy in Japan's ministry of foreign affairs, said that even though the Indian bid for NSG has collapsed because of Chinese resistance, Japan would continue to work with India so that it can be made an NSG member.
"We intend to continue working with India on the issue as we believe its membership of NSG will help strengthen the non-proliferation regime," Kawamura told TOI. He added that Japan will continue trying to convince other member states in India’s favour.
Even as Japan, as a "general sentiment", will continue to ask India to sign the non-proliferation treaty, it won’t allow India's NPT non-signatory status to come in the way of its support for India’s membership.
