Before going to vote during the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 11, 2019, do you know a sizeable percentage of candidates contesting has a criminal background? Countrywide, 91 parliamentary constituencies are going for polling during the first phase. In total we find a list of 1266 candidates fighting for their luck from these 91 constituencies to gain an entry into the parliament as an MP to represent the largest democracy on the earth. Look at the following statistics to know how many of them are with a criminal background, an analysis of the statistics based on the seriousness of the crime, and a party-wise study of the percentage of candidates with a criminal background.

This study is based on the scrutiny of the affidavits filed by the contesting candidates when they file their nomination from the different constituencies. According to the existing regulations, the candidates are given a format to complete and they are expected to furnish several details including a self-declaration of the criminal cases against them. If a candidate fails to provide an information asked or if wrong information is given, the candidature might be rejected during scrutiny of the nomination by the EC.
