India’s iconic batsman, Sachin Tendulkar, was enlisted into the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame on Sunday night.

"It's a huge honour for me," said Tendulkar during the ceremony. South African legend Allan Donald and two-time World-cup winner Cathryn Fitzpatrick were also inducted into ICC’s Hall of Fame, at the same time.

Favourite Son
Tendulkar set the bar in modern-day batsmanship and in doing so, became the favourite son of a nation, wrote ICC.

Previously, five cricketers from India were enlisted in the Hall of Fame including Bishan Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev in 2009, Anil Kumble in 2015 and Rahul Dravid in 2018.

Sachin, despite having such a historic record for his performance, wasn’t inducted last year because he wasn’t eligible for it. Any player inducted to ICC’s Hall of Fame must have quit International cricket minimum for 5 years. Sachin Tendulkar retired in November 2013.

Tendulkar still has a strong fan following in spite of his retirement. He receives the loudest cheer at the stadiums in India and abroad. He recently made his debut as a cricket commentator.

In his long and illustrious career, he scored 34,357 runs across formats and is the only batsman to have 100 international centuries tucked under his belt.

Sachin made his cricket career debut at the age of 15 in Ranji Trophy in 1989 and scored a 100 against Gujarat. He was selected in the Indian cricket team by Raj Singh Durgarpur when he was 16. Tendulkar played his first cricket match against Pakistan in Karachi and scored 15 runs. Sachin’s performance peaked during 1994 and 1999. Sachin scored his first ODI century during Australia in Sri Lanka at Colombo on 9 September 1994. Even after five years of his retirement, Sachin remains the highest scorer of test cricket.
