This came after current controlling owner Jerry Richardson announced his intention to the sell the team amid allegations of sexual harassment and use of a racial slur directed at a team scout.

The Panthers initially announced on Friday that they had launched an investigation against Richardson. On Sunday morning, it was announced that the NFL would take over the investigation after reports that other teams questioned the validity of the Panthers investigating their own owner. But after the bombshell allegations were dropped by SI, Richardson announced his intention to sell the team after the season.

Diddy followed up his initial proclamation by pointing out that there are currently no African-American controlling owners in the NFL. He punctuated that tweet with the declaration, "Let's make history."

According to the most recent valuations by Forbes, the Panthers are valued at $2.3 billion. Richardson owns 48% of the franchise. The ownership group paid $140 million to the NFL for the expansion team in 1993. If Richardson's controlling stake has been unchanged the entire team, that means his initial investment of roughly $70 million could net him something in the neighborhood of $1.1-1.2 billion.
