A 35-year-old female charged with the murder of an 84-year-old woman in California is reportedly the sister of NBA star Kawhi Leonard, her aunt told The Press-Enterprise.

Kimesha Monae Williams is being held without bail by police alongside Candace Townsel, 39, after the pair were charged with robbing and killing Afaf Anis Assad, a statement from the sheriff's department in Riverside County, California confirmed.

The incident took place on the morning of Saturday August 31 at the Pechanga Resort Casino in California.

CBS reports that security footage from the casino shows Williams and Townsel targeting Asad as she entered, following her from an entrance to a public bathroom before emerging four minutes later.

The elderly woman was then found unconscious and bloodied by resort workers, before being transferred to a local hospital where she subsequently died from her injuries on Wednesday, the sheriff's statement said.

The Press-Enterprise reports that the two women broke Assad's skull and stole her purse.

Williams' connection to Los Angeles Clippers forward Leonard was confirmed by her aunt, Denise Woodard, who told The Press-Enterprise of the pair's relation while speaking from the window of her family home in Moreno Valley.

"He didn't have anything to do with this," Woodard added.

Leonard signed a $103 million contract with the LA Clippers in July after helping the Toronto Raptors to win the NBA Championship last season.

The 28-year-old NBA star's father was murdered at a car wash in Compton in 2008.

Williams and Townsel will appear in court on September 19.
