This is one of my favorite moments from 'Dark Souls 3'

"Dark Souls 3," the third and possibly final game in the beloved "Dark Souls" franchise, finally released on Tuesday.

So far, I love this game.

I'm a big fan of "Bloodborne," the last game from the makers of "Dark Souls 3," and I'd previously played the first couple of levels in the original "Dark Souls" game.

So far, I've played "Dark Souls 3" for about 12 hours and I've managed to beat the first two bosses. And while I've already experienced a lot of memorable moments in this new game, one moment stands out above the rest.

In the second main area of the game, the High Wall of Lothric, you approach an old castle that's being attacked by a firebreathing dragon.

If you provoke the dragon, it'll kill all the enemies in the area with its fiery breath - and if you're not careful, it'll kill you too. But if you simply run fast enough, you can get past the dragon's flames and enter a quiet section of the castle.

I'd done just that - my heart was pounding after narrowly escaping the dragon's flames, and I walked inside.

The room was totally quiet and devoid of enemies. And I found a treasure chest!

A sign in front of the treasure chest said "liar ahead" - leaving signs for other online players is a big part of "Dark Souls" - but I had no idea what that meant, so I opened it.

Big mistake.

Yep, that's "Dark Souls" for you. Just when you think you're safe, an enemy comes out of nowhere and totally eviscerates you.

These fake treasure chests, or "mimics," are actually in the prior "Dark Souls" games, but I'd never managed to encounter one. So imagine my surprise when I think I'm about to get a nice item or weapon, only to be devoured whole.

A couple of deaths later, I returned to that dungeon and tried attacking the chest before it could eat me. Here's what happened.

If that's not one of the creepiest things ever, I don't know what is. It also sums up why I'm loving "Dark Souls 3" so far: It's creepy, it's fun, and it's full of surprises.
