Age is no barrier for these Indian women mountaineers
Poorna Malavath, 13
This 13-year old schoolgirl has been the youngest female to reach the highest mountain peak at 29,029 feet — Mount Everest — just at the age of 13. Malavath, who comes from a small village in India, concluded her mountaineering journey in May 2014 with a wish to prove that ‘girls can achieve anything.’ Despite the challenging weather and keeping up with packaged food, the girl broke the record of a 14-year old American boy climbing the world’s highest peak just a month after an avalanche swept over the peak.
Premlata Aggarwal, 48
At the age of 48, Premlata Aggarwal, mother of two, came out as the first Indian woman to surmount all seven highest peaks, globally. In fact, Saluting her spirit for mountaineering, the Indian government awarded her with Padma Shri and Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award. She also scored a place in the Limca Book of Records for a 40-days camel trek.
Sangeeta Bahl, 53
A former Miss India finalist in 1985, Sangeeta Bahl, has become the oldest woman to climb the highest mountain peak — Mount Everest — at the age of 53. Seven years after the start of the journey to scale mountain peaks in all seven continents, Bahl completed her journey to reach the top of the highest mountain range on 19 May.
Swarnalata Dalai, 20
Swarnalata Dalai, in a team under the mentorship of Sandeep Toliya, climbed Mount Everest at the age of 20. Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF), promoting adventure sports in the country trained the girl to accomplish this remarkable feet in 2018.
Poonam Rana, 21
Poonam Rana, who hails from Uttarakhand, India, successfully climbed the summit of Mount Everest in 2018 at a young age of 21. Trained under Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF), the mission was sponsored by Tata Steel.
