Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez didn't have a Wikipedia page on Monday. On Tuesday, she shook up the Democratic party by winning the New York primary election

• Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old member of the Democratic Socialists of America, just won the Democratic primary for the New York congressional race. 
• She defeated the incumbent Democrat, Joseph Crowley, in what's being described as a huge upset and shake-up for the Democratic party. 
• What's also surprising is that she didn't even have a Wikipedia page before her win. Newswire services also lacked photos of her. 

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year-old who shook up the Democratic party in a shocking upset in the New York congressional primary, couldn't be found on Wikipedia at the start of the week. By Tuesday, she had defeated the incumbent Democrat Joseph Crowley and became the Democratic candidate for New York's congressional race.

She now has a Wikipedia page, though. 

As Gizmodo reports,  Ocasio-Cortez didn't have a Wikipedia page and still wasn't present in any photos in AP's newswire service as of Wednesday morning (which has since changed - there are a few photos of her now).

It's a testament to the effectiveness of her grassroots campaign - Ocasio-Cortez didn't have the budget, press team, or online presence of an establishment Democrat. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America and a member of the working class, she certainly wasn't the traditional Democratic candidate. 

But in a time when sites like Wikipedia are the go-to to find context for what's going on in the world, it's surprising that a relatively unknown candidate succeeded in such a victory. 

NBC's Ben Collins tweeted that someone tried to make a Wikipedia page for Ocasio-Cortez last August, but it was removed and the user was told not to add her page unless "multiple, reliable secondary sources discuss her in depth."
