If money can buy happiness, then this is it. Sony is asking for extra premium for this TV but in return, the company is giving you the experience of a lifetime. This is one of the first televisions to enter India that support 4K resolution. The picture colours on this TV are mindboggling and one cannot resist ogling over the slim bezel of this thin tube. Here, Sony has outdone itself in picture quality and design.
Mobile of the year – HTC One
In 2013, a new smartphone was launched almost every week. We saw Sony, Apple, Nokia and LG battling it out, but one brand that pipped them all at the post is the HTC One. HTC did have some stocking problems in the beginning, but that could just have been the attention-grabber, which made consumers want it even more. This phone hit the market in the first half of 2013 and everyone wanted to get their hands on it. HTC One has the best of both worlds. With HTC’s own Sense UI in place, this phone has the best features cherry-picked from the iOS and the Android. In addition, it is a brilliant piece of machinery to look at and use.
Laptop of the Year – MacBook Air (13-inch)
There were some strong contenders in this category such as Dell XPS 15, Apple’s MacBook Air 13-inch came out as the winner. One can blame the not-so-great Windows OS 8 for PC to be the deciding factor behind the win but overall, the Air 13 is a great machine. It is slim, quick, users get a whopping 12 hours of battery backup and the screen is brilliant to work on. Need we say more?
Camera of the Year – Canon 700D
Canon sure knows how to build a DSLR and out of the whole lot, this is, by far, the best we have used this year. Yes, it has faced tough competition from some of the Sony Alphas and Nikons, but has prevailed because of its great pricing and performance. A 9 point auto focus system and 18 MP sensor do the magic, and users end up getting fabulous photographs. We, for one, were spellbound by this camera’s LCD. This one is perfect for indoor and outdoor shots.
When it comes to superb sound, Bose is the company one can rely upon. Besides dazzling resonance, the headphones can cancel the ambient noise and still let the important announcements seep through. Bose has managed to do a great job with this headphone, but we do want its price to come down a little.
Tablet of the Year – Apple iPad Air
No points for guessing this one. Yes, the Apple iPad Air is our tablet pick of the year. Apple is famous for developing great devices and the iPad Air is the perfect example. It is the best iPad till date and has an extremely desirable bezel with powerful machinery inside. Loads of apps are available for this tablet and we are yet to come across an Android tablet that can take on the likes of this one.
Accessory of the Year – Sony SmartWatch 2
Although this Smartwatch has been designed and manufactured by Sony, it is compatible with any of the latest Android phones. This watch hooks with most Android smartphones via Bluetooth and lets you manage many things including voice calls. As more and more apps are being built for this watch and because of its wearability comfort, it is our accessory pick of the year 2013.
Game of the Year – GTA V
In 2013, we have seen some outrageously cool games being launched. Some of them have impressive graphics and some have intriguing game plots. Some let us go faster than the speed of light and some let us slash our enemies in half. GTA V allows us to do all of that and more. Rockstar Games has brought in a hearty package where you get to play not one, not two, but three game characters, and lead different lives all at once. You can switch between them at the press of button. And don’t even get us started in the brilliant open world, which has no boundaries. GTA V is definitely a game-changer.
Gadget of the Year – Google LG Nexus 5
For this category, we were looking for a path-breaking gadget and many names, such as the iPad Air and Samsung Galaxy Gear came up. But finally, we decided on the Nexus 5 – it is a complete package when it comes to looks, latest firepower under the hood, user interface and more importantly, pricing. It has the latest KitKat Android OS and will get the latest upgrades before any other Android device. Made by LG and backed by Google, this smartphone comes with an impossible-to-match price tag, putting any other multi-national phone-maker on the backfoot. LG threw everything in this phone except the kitchen sink. So here you are – Business Insider India’s Gadget of the Year is Google LG Nexus 5.
[Honorary Mention] Gaming console of the Year - Sony PlayStation 4
Yes, this gaming console will start its sales in India from the first week of January 2014, but the PS4 has already been showcased here in December 2013. Whatever little we played on this console seemed impressive and its fresh design brings it to our list of top gadgets of the year.
