  • Lincoln Payton, who spent 33 years at BNP Paribas, is leaving the bank this quarter, sources familiar with his departure said.
  • Payton most recently served as head of Americas advisory for the French firm's corporate and institutional banking business.
  • The firm has trailed its peers in North American deals, though it did jump 19 spots in league tables between 2017 and 2018, according to Dealogic.

Longtime BNP Paribas banker Lincoln Payton is leaving within the next few weeks, sources tell Business Insider.

The head of Americas advisory for the French bank's corporate and institutional banking (CIB) business has spent the vast majority of his career at the bank, joining its London commodity group in 1986, according to a corporate biography.

During his 33 years at BNP, Payton's roles have included building the Latin America business and leading the firm's global energy and commodity practice out of the Paris office.

A spokeswoman declined to comment on his departure and Payton did not respond to requests for comment.

BNP jumped up the league tables in North American mergers and acquisitions recently, ranking 26th last year, with $66 billion in deals. That's up from 45th place and $9 billion of transactions in 2017, according to Dealogic.

In June, BNP announced a leadership reshuffle at the top levels. Jean-Yves Fillion, the firm's chief executive officer of Americas CIB and CEO of the US, moved up to chairman of CIB Americas. Bob Hawley, CIB's second-in-command, moved up to replace Fillion, and Pierre Veyres took over for Hawley. Payton's departure is understood to be related to the leadership changes.
