May auto sales see Maruti, two-wheelers make a comeback; EVs accelerate

Maruti Suzuki

India’s top carmaker, Maruti Suzuki sold 1,43,708 cars in May 2023, which is 4.7 percent higher than the 1,37,320 cars sold in April 2023. Its compact cars – Baleno, Swift and WagonR were among its most sold cars.

Hyundai

Hyundai came in the second spot as it sold 48,601 cars in May 2023. However, its sales went down by 2.2 percent from 49,701 cars sold in April. The company said its sales were fueled by the Creta and Venue SUVs.

Tata Motors

Indian automaker Tata Motors sold 45,984 cars in May 2023, which includes 5,805 electric cars. Its sales also went down by 2.2 percent from 47,007 cars sold in April.

Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra & Mahindra reported sales of 32,886 cars in May 2023, down 8.6 percent from 35,997 cars sold in April. The company’s top selling cars include the Mahindra Scorpio-N, Thar and the XUV 700.

Hero MotoCorp

Hero MotoCorp emerged as the biggest two-wheeler maker, recording sales of 5,19,474 vehicles in May 2023. This is 40.84 percent higher than 3,68,830 vehicles sold in April 2023. Its affordable bike Splendor emerged as its best selling bike.

TVS Motor

TVS Motor reported sales of 20,253 electric scooters, up from 8,751 scooters sold in April 2023 – registering a 131 percent rise. Its overall vehicle sales increased to 3,19,295 units in May 2023, up from 2,93,204 vehicles sold in April 2023.

Bajaj Auto

Bajaj Auto reported sales of 1,94,811 units in May 2023, up from 1,81,828 units sold in April 2023. The company sold 9,910 electric scooters in May 2023, up from 3,698 scooters in April 2023 – a 168 percent increase.

Ather Energy

Ather Energy reported sales of 15,256 electric scooters in May 2023, up from 7,786 electric scooters sold in April 2023, a 96 percent increase. The increase in prices from June 1, 2023 could be one of the reasons for the increase in sales.

Ola Electric

Ola Electric emerged as the biggest electric two-wheeler maker, with sales of 28,438 units in May 2023. This too moved up 29 percent from 21,991 in April 2023. One of the reasons for the increase in sales is the increase in prices which came into effect from June 1, 2023.
