The Indian car market is flooded with demands for compact SUVs — well, all thanks to coronavirus, which has burnt a hole in the pockets forcing people to buy cheaper cars. While the cars may be cheaper, the competition in the segment is tighter, and the automakers are bringing whole new features to woo prospective customers.

From the launch of Nissan's Magnite last year in December to Renault's Kiger last month — the competitive sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment is gaining traction in the market. These two SUVs are the latest ones to rival each other to strengthen their positions.

And, for the uninitiated, the Kiger and Magnite both are coming out of Renault-Nissan's Alliance plant in Chennai's Oragadam. While Nissan has struggled to sell its cars in India and forayed into SUVs for the first time — Renault’s Kiger is enjoying the legacy created by Triber and Kwid in the Indian market.

Designed in collaboration with Indian and French teams, Renault’s sub-4 metre SUV Kiger has been developed and produced in India. The Kiger boasts of features like a twin-slat chrome grille, tri-LED headlights, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, among others.

At the same time, Nissan priced the Magnite at a lower cost than its peers Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and others. The compact SUV also comes with a variety of features like cruise control, 360-degree around-view monitor, connectivity features and wireless charger, air purifier, ambient mood lighting, puddle lamps, 60-40 split foldable rear seats and high-end speakers, among others.

The price of Renault Kiger starts at ₹5.45 lakh and goes up to ₹9.72 lakh. In contrast, Nissan has priced its Magnite reasonably. The company launched its car at an introductory starting price of ₹4.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Kiger comes with two engine options — 1-litre Energy and 1-litre Turbo with 2 pedal offerings on each of the engines — and is available in four trims -- RXE, RXL, RXT and RXZ.

Whereas Magnite offers three trims — one-litre petrol, one-litre turbo manual and CVT trims — that the company claims of delivering fuel efficiency of 18.75 km, 20 km and 17.7 km per litre, respectively.

Kiger comes with two front airbags for the driver and front-seat passenger, along with the two side airbags. Both front seats get seat belt reminder alerts for enhanced safety.

At the same time, safety features on the Magnite include anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), hydraulic brake assist (HBA), vehicle dynamic control (VDC), traction control system (TCS), hill start assist (HSA), speed-sensing door lock, central locking, 205 mm ground clearance and dual airbag system.
