Indian students are enhancing their digital capabilities by taking up courses in artificial intelligence, blockchain and machine learning.

According to the online learning platform Coursera, artificial Intelligence is the most in-demand subject, followed by its specialisations. As many as 2 million enrolled in the course in 2019.

“With the growing relevance of new age skills needed to keep pace with the changing workplace, employers are acknowledging the importance for stackable credentials. Therefore, there is a need to upskill talent and to advance careers, increase employability, and boost businesses,” said Raghav Gupta, managing director of Coursera- India and APAC.

From a basic course targeting a layman to understand — AI for everyone — to tech centric programming and machine learning concepts, it is safe to say that 2019 has been a year of AI.

“In India, we have observed more and more executives and C-suite level officials have been enrolling in AI courses over the past year realizing its significant impact on business,” Gupta added.

Here are the 10 most popular courses of 2019, according to Coursera.

Machine Learning by Stanford University

Machine learning has been the most sought after online course. It includes modules on introduction to machine learning, pattern recognition, and data mining techniques. It also provides access to case studies and applications to understand the algorithms.

Programming for everybody (Getting started with Python) by University of Michigan

University of Michigan’s “Programming for everyone” is the second most popular course in the country after Stanford’s Machine Learning. The course educates on basics of Python programming language. It includes tutorials on writing short codes in Python that requires understanding of simple mathematics.

Neural Networks and Deep learning by deeplearning.ai

With the advent of AI and automation, deep learning engineers are much in demand. The course helps learners understand technologies behind deep learning algos, neural networks — its architecture and implementation. It will teach how deep learning works, practically.

AI for everyone by deeplearning.ai

Not just techies, AI for everyone targets learners from all sectors and levels. The course introduces AI terminologies — data science concepts, machine learning, deep learning among others. The programme will teach how to build an AI strategy to increase productivity.

In a larger picture, the online education industry is also to gain with these digital advancements. It is expected to grow to 9.6 million users by 2021 from 1.6 million in 2016, according to a KPMG report.
