Coursera launches campus product to integrate online learning with university lessons

Online learning platform Coursera has rolled out its ‘Coursera on Campus’ initiative to offer job-relevant courses and learning programmes to universities across the globe.

Any university — with or without partnership — can access the learning content available on the platform.

“Coursera for Campus gives universities the ability to quickly respond to the rapidly changing economy. With access to content from 200 top universities and industry educators, higher education institutions can easily enhance their existing curricula with critical digital skills and author online courses,” said Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of Coursera.

This implies that over 3,600 courses on Coursera will be made available to students and faculty, globally along with the access to various assessment tools, projects and analytics to track performance.

It will include API integration, gradebooks, and plagiarism detection for assessment. The faculties will also be able to publish private lessons, courses, assessments. They will be exposed to ‘Skills Index Dashboard’ where they can assess students on their behaviour, and skill mastery.

The Global Skill Index 2019 published by Coursera shows that over 60% of the world’s population lacks critical skills.

In a changing job market, learned skills have a shorter shelf-life. According to Zairus Master, CEO, Shine Learning, working professionals will need to re-skill themselves every 3-4 years so as to evolve in a competitive working environment.

“Hundreds of millions of job seekers will enter the workforce in the coming years, but higher education in many countries finds it difficult to deliver the skills students need in the age of AI and automation,” Maggioncalda added.

In a larger picture, the online education industry in India is reportedly expected to grow to 9.6 million users by 2021 from 1.6 million in 2016, according to a KPMG report.
