  • The feature has been seen in beta versions of Twitter in the past.

  • Twitter’s product lead all but confirmed the feature, though we don’t know when the full roll out is set to occur.

Micro-blogging platform Twitter may be developing ways for users to accept payments in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Alessandro Paluzzi, a mobile developer from Italy, tweeted screenshots that suggest that Twitter will allow users to add their Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet addresses to their profiles soon.

The feature seems to be part of Twitter’s recently announced Tip Jar function, which allows users to ‘tip’ influencers for their content — not to be confused with Super Follows, which allow influencers to provide premium content to paid subscribers. It’s unclear whether Twitter will eventually allow cryptocurrencies for subscribing through Super Follows as well.

While Paluzzi does have a track record of dependable leaks, this particular tidbit comes with added support. His tweet was retweeted by Kavyon Beykpour, who leads product for Twitter. Beykpour simply put a lightning emoji on the retweet, which may not be a confirmation, but is probably as close as we’ll get to Twitter confirming a feature like this ahead of time.

Rumour mill abuzz

It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time Twitter has been said to be working on adding cryptos to its platform. A report from MacRumours last month also said that Twitter’s beta users have seen tutorials about Bitcoin on Tip Jar in that version. “Details in the latest Twitter beta indicate that users will be directed through a Bitcoin tutorial that includes details on the Bitcoin Lightning Network and custodial and non-custodial Bitcoin wallets,” the report said.

Jack Dorsey’s love for Bitcoin

More importantly, Twitter’s chief executive officer and founder, Jack Dorsey is a known supporter of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. In the company’s July earnings call this year, Dorsey had told investors that Bitcoin will be a “big part” of Twitter’s future. Of course, he didn’t provide any details of how the cryptocurrency will be included, but that’s at least a confirmation that Twitter isn’t opposed to working alongside crypto tokens.

Dorsey is no stranger to cryptocurrencies either. His payments company, Square, has already talked about adding Bitcoin to its platform. Dorsey himself has also talked about building a decentralized exchange for cryptocurrencies. In February this year, Dorsey and rapper Jay-Z had invested 500 Bitcoins, worth over $23 million at the time, to fund Bitcoin development in countries like Africa and India.
