All Delhi government cars will have GPS installed to track their location and keep a check on their misuse. This decision was taken after several complaints were registered from various quarters about the misuse of government vehicles by officials for personal use.

These will include the cars used by ministers as well as senior officers in the government, cars provided to officers of the municipal corporations, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Transport Corporation, various boards and commissions. The General Administrative Department (GAD) minister, Gopal Rai, has been asked to prepare a proposal in this regard.

Since one officer often uses more than one car, installing GPS may even help in tracking two vehicles simultaneously.

This is expected to increase the transparency in the workings of different departments and that public money spent on fuel and maintenance of these vehicles is not wasted thanks to an officer’s personal purposes.

Earlier in May this year, the government had directed all civil servants to sign an undertaking every month that the government vehicles were being used only for official purposes. A control centre is also being set up wherein the use of vehicles will be tallied with what is notified by the undertaking and the GPS data.
