Disney’s Lion King inches closer to ₹500 million business in India in its first week

Disney’s classic remake ‘The Lion King’ generated a massive business of ₹130 million on its opening day in India. And, it is close to making as much as ₹500 million-mark during its first week.

Trade experts are also betting that the film could record the third-highest opening weekend for a Hollywood film in India, after Avengers: Endgame and its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War. The final weekend collection numbers are not out as yet.

Jon Favreau, the director of the movie has recreated the famous animated movie of the 90s, to tell the story of Simba and Mufasa. Only, his version has photo-realistic, and computer-generated animation.

This is Favreau’s second animated blockbuster. The Jungle Book which released in 2016, also saw a grand opening in India with ₹109 million (₹10.9 crore) on its first day. The Lion King has surpassed the mark.



The Hindi version of the movie is also drawing audiences as Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan voiced Mufasa in the dubbed version. His son, Aryan Khan voiced Simba, making his much-awaited Bollywood debut.

According to a report in "variety.com", the film is already roaring past $100 million in ticket sales globally. In fact, it posted to become the second biggest opening day of the year behind Avengers: Endgame in a few markets like France ($4.8 million), Australia ($2.9 million) and Germany ($2.3 million).
