On the other hand, crimes too have inspired many TV shows and movies in addition to many documentaries. Here's a list of highly-rated serial killer movies based on true stories.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)

This cult classic focuses on the story of real-life murderers, Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole. The film is a blend between fact and fiction because journalists and investigators found it hard to trust Lucas. Henry Lee Lucas confessed to around 600 murders even though he was only convicted of 11.

Psycho (1960)

Psycho was released in 1960, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and is loosely based on the real-life killings of Wisconsin serial murderer Ed Gein. The killer was known to have had his own odd relationship with his mother, who abused him and his siblings emotionally and forbade them from interacting with women.

Zodiac (2007)

Directed by David Fincher and based on Robert Raysmith's 1986 novel, Zodiac is an epic account of the serial killer who littered the San Francisco Bay Area with bodies between the 1960s to 1970s. The Zodiac killer was never caught and had 37 claimed kills.

Jeffrey Dahmer is the most infamous serial killer of all time. And, My Friend Dahmer might be the best biography-based psychological thriller film about him ever made. Jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 men, took photos of their corpses and had sex with them.

Monster, a biographical crime film is a must-watch. The movie is based on the life of Aileen Wuornos, a Daytona Beach prostitute who became a serial killer and killed 7 men.

10 Rillington Place (1971)
