Britney Spears' husband Sam Asghari has filed for divorce after 14 months of marriage, according to documents reviewed by Insider.
Asghari cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the divorce.
According to the divorce filing, Spears and Asghari separated on July 28, 2023 with Asghari seeking spousal support and attorneys' fees.
TMZ reports he may also contest the prenuptial agreement he signed prior to their marriage in 2022.
Multiple outlets, including TMZ and People, had reported earlier Wednesday that the couple have separated after just over a year of marriage.
Variety reports that Spears has retained celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser to represent her in the proceedings. Wasser has represented the likes of Kim Kardashian and Johnny Depp in similar cases in the past. Spears will also continue to work with her own attorney, Mathew Rosengart, who represented the singer in legal proceedings to end her conservatorship in 2021.
Wasser is currently representing actor Kevin Costner in an ongoing, acrimonious divorce battle with his estranged wife Christine Baumgartner. The attorney is also representing Joe Manganiello after he and actor Sofia Vergara announced that they were getting divorced last month.
Spears and Asghari first met in 2016 on the set of Spears' music video for "Slumber Party." They later tied the knot in 2022, at a small but star-studded ceremony, including Madonna, Paris Hilton, and Selena Gomez.
Representatives for Spears and Asghari didn't immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
Us Weekly reports the couple were having "ups and downs" earlier this summer, with Asghari being spotted without his wedding ring on in March. At the time, People reported Asghari removed his ring due to filming for an unspecified movie role.
Asghari, a 29-year-old model, actor, and personal trainer, immigrated with his family from Iran to the US as a child, founding a personal training program, Asghari Fitness, in 2020.
The personal trainer played Spears' love interest in the "Slumber Party" music video.
"I was excited that I get to meet one of the biggest artists of all time. I had butterflies," Asghari told Men's Health of the encounter, adding that the two exchanged phone numbers at the time.
People reported that Spears reached out first, finding Asghari's number in her purse months later.
"I was like, 'He was really cute, this guy was really cute,' so I called him," Spears said in a 2017 interview on AMP 103.7's "Fast in the Morning with Nathan Fast and Sybil Summers." "He's just a really fun, funny person."
Spears made their relationship public in January 2017 after sharing a photo of the pair on Instagram.
The singer often posted about Asghari on social media, writing in 2018 that he made her "feel like the luckiest girl in the world."
In April 2022, the singer announced she was pregnant at age 40. A month later, Spears revealed she'd had a miscarriage ahead of her wedding.
"It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that we have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy," Spears wrote in an Instagram post.
"Perhaps we should have waited to announce until we were further along, however we were overly excited to share the good news," Spears added. "Our love for each other is our strength. We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family."
Spears claimed she was forced to be on birth control while under a court-ordered conservatorship overseen by her estranged father, Jamie Spears, and wasn't allowed to have children or marry.
In November 2021, a judge granted the end of her 13-year conservatorship.
"I am so happy for her and I've been a backbone for her as much as I could, but this is all on her. She's been a rock. She inspires me. She loves her fans," he told Variety after the ruling.
Spears has two teen sons, Sean Preston and Jayden, with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
