Chris Ayres, actor known for voicing Frieza in 'Dragon Ball,' dies aged 56
- Actor Chris Ayres, best known for voicing "Dragon Ball" character Frieza, died on Monday aged 56.
- His girlfriend thanked anime fans, saying: "Chris loved you all."
The voice actor Chris Ayres has died at 56, his girlfriend announced on social media.
Krystal Laporte, who is also a voice actor, wrote: "On October 18th at 8:40 pm, my world went dark. Christopher Owen Ayres passed away peacefully, held close by his mother, brother, and girlfriend," Deadline reported.
Ayres is best known for voicing the "Dragon Ball" villain Frieza.
Laporte addressed anime fans in her statement saying: "Chris loved you all. How much he loved other people filled the vast majority of our conversations. To those of you who truly loved him back, thank you.
"To those of you who stayed in touch, checked on him, reminded him that he was so, so much more than his job. You were the fuel of his fight.

"You fed the dreams of a future that kept him going longer than any normal person could go. I hope where you are, the first thing you did was take a long, deep breath with your perfect lungs and dance again."
No cause of death was given, but Deadline noted that Ayres was diagnosed with end-stage cardiac obstructive pulmonary disease in 2017.
According to Comic Book News, he received a double lung transplant in 2019. His Facebook page also shows that he has undergone multiple surgeries as he kept his fans updated with his health status. Ayres had a GoFundMe page for his fans to help with his medical costs.
Sean Schemmel, who voiced Goku in the English voice-over of "Dragon Ball" with Ayres, also paid tribute alongside a picture of him and Ayres.

"Dragon Ball" follows the adventures of a powerful alien sent to Earth called Goku. Frieza is Goku's archnemesis, a powerful tyrant bent on conquering the universe that clashes with Goku multiple times.
According to his IMDB page, Ayres has been a voice actor since 1973 and has had roles in English voice-overs of many popular animes such as "One Piece," "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood," "Black Butler," "Akame Ga Kill" and "Fairy Tail." He began his role as the voice of Frieza in English voice-overs in 2009 for "Dragon Ball Z: Kai" and since returned for subsequent movies and games as the character even after he became ill.
