Beyond Pathaan: Indian films that grossed ₹1,000 crore worldwide

SRK-starrer Pathaan grosses ₹1,000 crore

Director Siddharth Anand’s action-drama Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan as the titular protagonist, grossed ₹1,000 crore worldwide – of which ₹623 crore was in India and ₹377 crore, overseas. It’s the fifth Indian film to achieve this mark.

The coveted ₹1,000-crore club

Multiple Indian movies have made it to the ₹100 crore and even ₹200 crore club in India, but to date, only five movies have made it to the elite ₹1,000 crore club - only two of which have been Hindi language films. Here’s a look at the other four movies:

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

Released in 2017, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion was the sequel to Baahubali - both directed by SS Rajamouli. Simultaneously shot in Telugu and Tamil, the film starred Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah, among others.

Baahubali 2: ₹1,000 crore in just 10 days

Baahubali 2 grossed ₹1000 crore worldwide in just 10 days of its release, becoming the first Indian film to achieve this milestone.

Dangal

Widely regarded as one of Bollywood’s finest sports dramas, Dangal was directed by Nitesh Tiwari and starred Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra. It was inspired by the lives of Indian female wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari and their father, Mahavir Singh Phogat.

Dangal: ₹1,000 crore after release in China

Though released in India a year before Baahubali 2, it’s the second film to gross over ₹1,000 crore. This is because Dangal achieved the milestone after releasing in China in May 2017 – it actually crossed the ₹2,000 crore mark in worldwide collections, becoming the fifth non-English movie to do so in the history of world cinema.

KGF Chapter 2

KGF Chapter 2 stars Yash in the lead role. Directed by Prashanth Neel, the Kannada-language period action film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, and others. It’s the sequel to the 2018 action drama, KGF Chapter 1.

KGF Chapter 2: Highest-grossing Kannada film

Released in April 2022, KGF Chapter 2 is the highest-grossing Kannada film ever. It crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark in worldwide collections in just 14 days.

RRR

Yet another action-drama by SS Rajamouli, RRR has become a global phenomenon, having won multiple international awards, including a Golden Globe. Starring Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, the film is a fictionalised account of two Indian revolutionaries’ fight against the British Raj.

RRR: ₹1,000 crore in just 16 days

The film recorded ₹240 crore worldwide on its first day. And on April 10, 2022, just 16 days after its release, RRR crossed ₹1,000 crore in worldwide collections.
