Superstar Rajinikanth’s Darbar made its way to the theatres - though at an unearthly hour of 4 am in Chennai.

Long before the release, Rajnikanth and the cop movie was all what Twitter could talk about. After the release, tweets and comments came as fast and wide as an avalanche. And, most of them praised him.

Rajinikanth Aaditya pays the role of a cop Aaditya who goes after Mumbai’s largest drug cartel. The film also stars Nayanthara, Suniel Shetty, Nivetha Thomas, Prateik Babbar and Nawab Shah.

The movie is already a winner since it earned as much as ₹220 crore by selling rights. And, it could bring in viewers en masse since it’s the only movie released during Pongal, the biggest festival in South India.

In 2019, Rajinikanth’s Petta — released on Pongal — earned over ₹250 crore. Darbar will have to gross at least ₹280 crore to label itself as a ‘hit’. However, while Twitterati is thrilled, the critics weren’t too happy. “The old man lets it rip as he typically does. He is the true narcotic in this drug-and-vengeance saga, but his enthusiasm cannot animate outdated material. Sometimes, even Rajinikanth cannot,” wrote Nandini Ramnath from the Scroll.in.
