The latest episode of "Riverdale" finally unmasked the villain who's been terrorizing residents of the town with creepy videotapes showing their houses.

In season five, episode two (titled "Chapter 78: The Preppy Murders") detective duo Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones solved the VHS mystery that began early in season four, when Riverdale residents started receiving tapes on their doorsteps that showed their houses being watched from across the street.

The tapes became increasingly more disturbing, as the auteur targeted Archie Andrews and his friends by recreating disturbing events from their lives: Betty being accused of killing Jughead with a rock; Clifford Blossom killing Jason Blossom; Midge Klump being murdered by the Black Hood (aka Hal Cooper) on the night of the "Carrie" musical.

Two more tapes popped up during the season five premiere: a gruesome one shown at prom and another that was sent to Archie, recreating the season-one scene when the Black Hood held Archie at gunpoint at Pop's after shooting Fred Andrews - a moment that traumatized and haunted him ever since.

In episode two, the Cooper-Jones residence received another tape, which included footage taken inside the house, with the auteur even sneaking upstairs to the bedrooms of Betty and Jellybean (Jughead's younger sister).

Jughead realized only 1 person could have access to private details about their lives and get into their house undetected: Jellybean

Jughead realized Jellybean concocted this auteur mystery as a way to keep him in Riverdale since he's graduating high school soon and will be heading off to the Univerity of Iowa to pursue creative writing.

Jellybean figured her older brother wouldn't be able to resist the urge to solve a mystery, and she was right.

But Jellybean didn't pull off her plan alone.

She had help from a kid named Ricky DeSantos who first showed up during season three and played Gryphons and Gargoyles with her.

When the two started hanging out, Ricky introduced Jellybean to Blue Velvet, the video store that had a section with more obscure and violent tapes. That's how Jellybean came up with the idea to send VHS tapes to people.

Jellybean sent the first tape to Jughead shortly after he started attending Stonewall Prep. She wanted to get his attention and it worked, so she moved on to recreating murders that took place in Riverdale.

With the help of Ricky and more kids from Archie's community center, they filmed the exteriors of peoples' houses.

The videos were meant to unsettle the families, but once Jellybean realized they weren't having the intended effect on her brother, the kids began recreating horrific events to get Jughead's attention.

They made the face masks and props at the Lodge's cabin in the woods, which was their secret hideout. David, the sleazy Blue Velvet owner, allowed the children to film the massacre video (which was shown at prom) inside his shop's private Scarlet Suite.

Jughead's sibling being the auteur made sense because she was the only person who would be able to access his fictional story about killing Mr. Honey (and use it as inspiration for one of the tapes) and film inside the Cooper-Jones house, with Ricky's help, without anyone suspecting a thing.

Jughead also told FP Jones that he didn't think Jellybean understood the enormity, severity, and darkness of what she did. All she wanted was to keep her brother in Riverdale.

Despite the trauma Jellybean caused to Jughead and his friends, she was forgiven near the end of the episode, as FP arrived home and hugged her.

The episode also revealed the auteur and the serial killer who was responsible for recent deaths are 2 separate people

Charles, the child of Alice Cooper and FP Jones who's been suspicious since his arrival in Riverdale, admitted that he was behind the killings of Stonewall Prep kids Bret Weston Wallis and Joan Berkeley.

He would have killed Donna Sweett too, had she not escaped earlier. Charles also murdered David and made it look like a suicide.

Plus, he knew that Jellybean was the auteur, but chose not to reveal that information to Betty and Jughead.

Betty and Jughead realized Charles was the murderer after figuring out that their phones were bugged with the same device Charles previously gave Betty to plant at Stonewall.

Charles, who's an FBI agent, also had the resources to bug phones and listen in on all their conversations over the past few months, kill Joan, and get Bret murdered in prison.

Charles had an accomplice who helped him carry out the murder of Bret: Chic, who previously arrived in Riverdale claiming to be Alice and FP's real son and is now in prison.

Charles and Chic's history and romantic relationship (and the secret plan they were hatching) were previously teased during season four, episode six.

Charles argued that he listened to Betty's conversations in order to protect her and he only went after people who deserved it or hurt people that he loves.

He justified killing the Stonewall students by arguing that they were horrible people who got away with their crimes, and said that David deserved it because he was "a degenerate, who helped scumbags like Bret."

It's unclear what will happen to Charles next, but Betty plans on making sure he confesses to all his crimes and goes to prison for life.
