South Indian movies overtake Bollywood & Hollywood in cinemas as per BookMyShow

The ticket booking service BookMyShow came out with its “Best of 2022” report, showcasing how there was an increase of immersive experiences after the pandemic. Of course, people also flocked to the theatres again. Here are the top 10 blockbusters that won Indian cinemagoers’ stamp of approval.

The Naveen Kumar Gowda a.k.a Yash starrer K.G.F: Chapter 2 remains one of the highest grossing Indian films in 2022 with worldwide collections crossing ₹1200 crore. Its teaser also became the most watched movie teaser on YouTube within 24 hours of its release.

RRR

RRR became the first Indian film to cross $100 million collection worldwide since the pandemic began. With worldwide collections of over ₹1200 crore, the film directed by S.S Rajamouli stars Jr. NTR, Ram Charan and Alia in leading roles. It’s a fictional account of an Indian rebellion against British rule.

Kantara

Kantara, a Kannada film shot in just 96 days and made on a budget of ₹16 crores, went on to become one of the highest grossing Indian films this year, crossing ₹400 crore in worldwide collections.

The Kashmir Files

Starring Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, and Darshan Kumar, among others, The Kashmir Files is based on the exodus of Kashmiri pandits from the state during the 1990s. The film collected ₹340.92 crore worldwide.

Casting Chiyaan Vikram as Aditya Karikalan, Karthi as Vanthiyathevan, Trisha as Kundavai Devi and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Queen Nandini, PS-I surpassed ₹350 crore within a week of its release. It is based on a 1955 fictional novel about the Chola prince Arulmozhivarman.

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva

The Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer Brahmastra, directed by Ayan Mukerji, collected ₹418.8 crore worldwide. The film is the first part of a planned trilogy. Worldwide, it was the 6th most searched movie on Google in 2022.

Vikram

The cast of this Tamil-language movie Vikram includes five national award winners-Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil, Vijay Sethupathi, Kalidas Jayaram, and Suriya. It also became the highest grossing Tamil film of 2022, earning ₹410 crore worldwide.

Drishyam 2

Released only a month ago, Drishyam 2 has already collected over ₹300 crore worldwide. This is Ajay Devgn’s third film to cross the ₹300 crore mark globally. A remake of the Malayalam film of the same name, Drishyam 2 also stars Tabu and Akshaye Khanna.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2

Directed by Anees Bazmee and starring Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani and Tabu, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 broke the dry spell of Bollywood - becoming the first Hindi language film to cross ₹200 crore in 2022. Worldwide, it managed to collect over ₹260 crore.
