Tirupati, Lucknow, Madurai and other non-metros that transacted the most for movies, as per BookMyShow

BookMyShow’s annual report “Best of 2022” stated that India saw a growth of 59% transactions in tier 2 and beyond markets. Six out of nine non-metro cities that had the maximum transactions for movies on BookMyShow (BMS) were from south India. Here are the top non-metro cities on BMS:

Ahmedabad

One of the non-metro cities with the maximum transitions for movies was Ahmedabad. Actor Ajay Devgn also opened a multiplex under his new venture, NY Cinemas, in Ahmedabad this year. According to the Bureau of Outreach and Communications, the state of Gujarat alone has 730 screens.

Trichy

Tamil Nadu has over 1000 screens with 230 screens in its capital Chennai alone. And Trichy, one of Tamil Nadu’s districts, is among India’s top non-metro cities to have transacted the most for movies on BMS.

Trivandrum

God’s own country, Kerala has nearly 600 screens. And its capital city Trivandrum is one of the most active non-metro cities for movie bookings on BMS.

Madurai

Madurai is another southern district from Tamil Nadu listed by BookMyShow as an active non-metro city for movie bookings. The state also has one of the highest number of theaters in India.

Tirupati

It may be known for its historic temples, but Tirupati, from Andhra Pradesh, is also one of the non-metro cities that transacted the most for movies on BookMyShow in 2022.

Vijayawada

Vijayawada is the second district from Andhra Pradesh to feature on BookMyShow’s list. With over 1700 screens, Andhra Pradesh actually has one of the highest theater penetration in southern India.

Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneshwar is the only non-metro city from Odisha to feature on the list. Media consulting firm Ormax Media estimated that over 5% of Odisha’s population loves going to theaters.

Mysuru

Mysuru, a city in the state of Karnataka, also features on BookMyShow list of non-cities that ‘thrived on movies’. Karnataka has over 800 screens with many theaters having a seating capacity above 1000.

Lucknow

The city of Nawabs, Lucknow is the only city from North India to feature on the list.Despite it being the most populated state, only Lucknow from UP made it to the list on BookMyShow.

Top transacting non-metro cities for LIVE events

On BookMyShow, the live events include concerts, shows, workshops, etc. The top transacting non-metro cities under this category in 2022 were Dehradun, Jaipur, Lucknow, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, Raipur, Goa, Cuttack, Guwahati and Imphal.
