IITs lose places in world rankings, MIT still on top

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the elite colleges in India, have lost places in this year’s QS World University Rankings 2016-17 which were issued today, while Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its top position for the fifth consecutive year.

The best-ranked institution from India remained Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, even as it lost ranks and dropped out of the top 150.

As the only good news, IIT Madras managed to break into the top 250, five ranks up from last year.

Talking of world's top 100 institutions in research impact, only four Indian institutions feature in the list, as compared to last year's five, since the ranking of IIT Madras has dropped to 101. In this field, India’s best institute is IISc, ranked 11th.

"The performance of Indian institutions in our recent regional rankings suggests that India is gaining some ground on its regional competitors. Though India is making substantial and commendable progress towards ensuring that more of its tertiary-age population have access to tertiary education, the global edition indicates that substantial challenges remain," said Ben Sowter, head of research at QS Intelligence Unit.
