IKEA sets example by offering six-month ‘paternity leave’ to employeesIKEA, the multinational furniture retailer from Netherlands, has decided to grant six months paid parental leave to all its employees in India. The policy would also be applicable to employees who opt for surrogate children and single parenthood.

In case of women employees, they will have an option of reduced work hours by 50% for another 16 weeks on the completion of said 26 weeks.

It was only last week that government mandated 26 weeks of paid maternity leaves to all working women in the organised sector, but there are no rules regarding paternity leave, which often ranges from one week to one month, depending on company guidelines.

As of now, IKEA has 250 employees in India, while 500-800 employees are supposed to be hired for its first store in Hyderabad, set to be opened next year.
