By: Srishti MaganThe Association for Democratic Reforms (ARD) in association with National Election Watch analysed the self-sworn affidavits of India’s current crop of chief ministers (CMs). As per their analysis, 43 percent of the 30 Indian CMs have criminal cases against them.

While only 37 percent of CMs are graduates, 97 percent of them are crorepatis, ie. 29 of 30. Here’s a look at the country’s top richest CMs:

With total assets worth ₹510 crore, Andhra Pradesh’s CM Y S Reddy is the country’s richest CM. He belongs to Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party, a regional political party.

Khandu is the CM of Arunachal Pradesh and ranks second with total assets worth ₹163 crore — a difference of a whopping ₹347 crore from Reddy. 39-year-old Khandu belongs to the national party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Naveen Patnaik, 72, is the CM of Odisha and has assets worth ₹63 crore, placing him third on the list. Patnaik who is the longest-serving CM in Odisha, is the founder and leader of the regional political party, Biju Janata Dal.

72-year-old Nagaland’s CM Neiphiu Rio is fourth on the list with total assets worth ₹46 crore. He belongs to the regional political party Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).

The Puducherry CM has assets worth ₹38 crore. In 2011, N Rangasamy, 70, founded the regional political party All India N R Congress as a breakaway from the Indian National Congress (INC).

At the sixth position is Telangana CM Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, who has total assets worth ₹23 crore. Rao, the founder of Bharat Rashtra Samithi, formerly known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi, has the maximum number of criminal cases against him — 64.

A politician from INC, Baghel is the CM of Chattisgarh and has assets worth ₹23 crore. He’s seventh on the list and has three criminal cases against him.

Politician and lawyer Himanta Biswa Sarma occupies the eighth position with assets worth ₹17 crore. Sarma, who originally belonged to the INC, joined his current party, BJP, in 2015.

At ninth position is Meghalaya’s CM Sangma with assets worth ₹14 crore. The 44-year-old politician studied at the Imperial College London (MBA) and Wharton School of Business (BBA). He’s a member of the National People's Party, a national-level political party.

A doctor and former teacher, Dr Manik Saha is the CM of Tripura. Saha quit Congress to join BJP in 2016. He’s at the tenth position with total assets worth ₹13 crore.

Only 66-year-old Mamata Banerjee, the CM of West Bengal, is not a crorepati. She’s also the country’s poorest CM with total assets worth ₹15 lakh. Banerjee founded the political party All India Trinamool Congress. She is also the only female CM in the country.
