US, Australia, Canada – Top choices for Indians who give up Indian passports

Indians gave up citizenship

The number of Indians giving up their Indian passports saw a significant jump – 1,63,370 in 2021 compared with 85,256 in 2020, according to a report released by the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) on Tuesday.

2019 data

In 2019, 1,44,017 Indians gave up their Indian passports, 19,353 less than those in 2021.

8.5 million renounced Indian passports in 7 years

Last December, Union minister of state (MoS) for home affairs Nityanand Rai told Parliament that around 8.5 million Indians renounced their citizenship in the last seven years (till September 30, 2021).

No. of Indians: 78,284 | The data suggests that the United States is still the preferred choice for Indians. The number of Indians who got US citizenship also surged from 30,828 in 2020 to 78,284 in 2021.
