As of 2022, India has 137 airports managed by the Airport Authority of India (AAI). In 2020, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shared during her budget speech that India will add 100 new airports by 2024. Here are the nine upcoming airports in India:

It took seven years but the new airport at North Goa’s Mopa, developed by GMR Airports Ltd., will soon begin commercial operations. The cargo facilities, passenger terminal and more were constructed by Philippines’ Megawide Construction Corporation. The estimated cost of phase I was ₹2,650 crore.

Initially planned to be launched during the pandemic, the launch of Noida international airport in Jewar has been postponed to December 2024. After its construction, Uttar Pradesh will be the only Indian state to have five international airports. Jewar airport’s Phase I estimated cost is ₹8,914 crore.

Another upcoming airport in the most populated state of India, Ayodhya airport in India will have an annual handling capacity of 6 lakh passengers. The design will reflect Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir. It is estimated to cost ₹242 crore - 52% of development work has already been completed.

More than 55% of the work has been completed for the Purandar airport in Pune, stated AAI. The estimated cost of the terminal building is ₹475 crore. It’s equipped to handle sixteen million passengers per annum. It comes under the PM-Gatishakti National Master Plan.

Kolkata, a metro city, has not yet finalised a land for its second airport despite a rise air traffic. The new airport is expected to be ready by 2030, though construction is yet to begin. Kalyani in the Nadia district was one of the places considered for the construction.

A new sustainable airport in Gujarat is taking shape in the Rajkot district, located in Hirasar village. The airport was designed by Delhi-based design and architecture firm, Creative Group and reportedly costs ₹2,654 crore.

The airport construction began in August 2021 and it will be fully operational by 2024. Proposed in 1997, the project finally got approved by the government in 2007. Its estimated cost is ₹16,700 crore.

Rewa airport is part of Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) regional connectivity scheme that was proposed by the Union ministry of Civil Aviation. The airport aims to connect Rewa with Bhopal, New Delhi, Indore and Mumbai. Its estimated cost of the first phase is ₹33.95 crore.

Earlier this year, Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that the government intends to create 33 new domestic cargo terminals, and set up 15 new flight training schools for pilots, while also increasing focus on the drone sector.
