A pregnant woman on Sunday (April 19) walked for seven kilometres in search of a hospital amid the coronavirus lockdown. The woman was in labour and delivered a baby at a dental clinic in Bengaluru’s Doddabommasandra area after a long walk with her husband.

“A woman aged 18 to 20 years old, had come to my clinic with her husband on April 14. They had walked for about 7 km in search of a hospital or clinic. Exhaustion of having walked for hours resulted in her delivering a premature baby within 5-10 minutes to reaching my dental clinic,” Dr Ramya, a dental surgeon, told ANI.

The New Indian Express identifies the woman named Shanti, a migrant worker from Odisha, who stays in Lottegollahalli with her husband.

Due to the nationwide lockdown, the couple could not find any public vehicle to travel to the hospital, and many of the medical institutions nearby were shut.

“Soon after the delivery, the woman became unconscious. The father thought the child had died and wrapped it in a paper for about 20 minutes. By then, I and my husband, Dr Himanish, a physician, arrived at the clinic. We found the baby alive. We began treating the baby as well as the mother. After they recovered, they were shifted to KC General Hospital in Malleswaram. We were told they were keeping well in the hospital,” said the doctor.
