Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad among top 10 Indian cities for women for city inclusion: Avtar

Avtar Group, a diversity advocate & workplace inclusion expert company, released its ‘Top Cities for Women in India’ report on Thursday. The list includes the top cities in India for women in terms of social and industrial inclusion with a population more than one million.

City Inclusion score

The city inclusion score is a composite of social inclusion score (SIS) and industrial inclusion score (IIS). The Social Inclusion Score (SIS) comprises of social factors contributing to making a city women friendly. Industrial Inclusion Score (IIS) evaluates the extent to which organisations in the city across industries are inclusive of women.

Chennai

City inclusion score: 78.41 | Chennai has constantly ranked among the safest cities in India for women. According to media reports, the city also has one the highest number of women in the workforce in India.

Pune

City inclusion score: 69.44 | Pune has become one of the biggest hubs for bussing artists and job seekers in India. As per the real estate firm Magic Bricks, Pune has a high population of women staying alone for work.

Bengaluru

City inclusion score: 64.48 | Bengaluru is widely regarded as the country’s IT hub and as per the Burgundy Private Hurun India report, India's top women employers are IT firms. In 2022, the Karnataka government even launched the Women@Work(WOW) program to enable increased participation of women in workforce.

Hyderabad

City inclusion score: 62.47 | The city of Nizams and palaces, Hyderabad has a lower crime rate as compared to Delhi, as per the Crime in India 2021 report by NCRB.

Mumbai

City inclusion score: 61.11 | One of top three cities in West India, Mumbai ranked above Ahmedabad overall. But its social inclusion score (56.83) was slightly lower than Ahmedabad (57.51).

Ahmedabad

City inclusion score: 58.62 | Ahmedabad had an overall rank of 8, but ranked 6th on SIS score and 7th on IIS.

Visakhapatnam

City inclusion score: 56.14 | The only city from Andhra Pradesh to make it to the top 10, Visakhapatnam recently saw a rise in crimes against women, as per the NCRB data.

Kolkata

City inclusion score: 54.80 | The city of joy is also one of the safest cities for women in India. It also had a high score of 77.61 in industrial inclusion.

Coimbatore

City inclusion score: 51.16 | Coimbatore is gradually becoming another IT hub of India. It scored 57.15 on industrial inclusion.

Madurai

City inclusion score: 49.35 | According to the Avatar report, tier 2 and tier 3 cities have comparatively higher scores for averages than tier 1 and metro cities. Madurai, which ranked at the tenth place, is one such example.
