Coronavirus cases in India rise to 13,387 — with 437 deaths so far

• There are 13,387 total cases of coronavirus in India.
  
• Of these 3% (437) have succumbed to death, while 1748 have recovered.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India is now at 13,386, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on April 17.

Of these 11201 are active cases of COVID-19, 1748 people have recovered and discharged, while one person was migrated to another country. So far, India has reported 437 deaths due to coronavirus.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total number of coronavirus cases rising to 3205, followed by New Delhi which has 1640 and Tamil Nadu which reported 1267 cases, according to the Health Ministry.

COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra zooms to 3,202 with 286 new cases
As many as 286 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in Maharashtra, taking the tally beyond the 3,200-mark on Thursday, while the fatality count inched towards the 200-level with seven more deaths, most of them senior citizens, said a state health official.

With the detection of fresh cases in the last 24 hours, Maharashtra has so far reported 3,202 coronavirus cases, the highest for a state in the country, while the death toll is now 194, he added.

Five more COVID-19 patients were discharged after recovering from the disease, taking the tally of cured cases to 300, he said.

Out of the seven deaths, four were from Pune and three from Mumbai. Six of the deceased persons had high-risk co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma and heart disease.

In Kolkata, more than 900 people arrested for violating lockdown

Several incidents of lockdown violation were reported from various parts of the city on Thursday and more than 900 people were arrested in the state capital alone for not obeying the shutdown restrictions.

Although major parts of the state wore a deserted look, people in some parts of the city were seen jostling with each other in markets to buy essential commodities, disregarding social distancing norms.

Many people were either arrested or detained by the police for not obeying the lockdown restrictions. At some places, the wrongdoers were given punishments such as to do squats and frog jumps, before they were let to go.

COVID-19 cases rise to 1,640 in Delhi
The Delhi government on Thursday said it will conduct COVID-19 tests on people engaged in delivering essentials like food as the number of novel coronavirus cases mounted to 1,640 in the national capital after 62 fresh cases and six deaths were reported.

The COVID-19 fatalities reported on Thursday are the highest in a day in the city, where a total of 38 people have died due to the disease, according to officials.

The government has decided to conduct COVID-19 tests on those engaged in delivery of food and milk as soon as the rapid anti-bodies test kits are received by it, the officials said in the wake of a pizza delivery agent testing positive for the coronavirus in south Delhi.

The 19-year-old delivery agent had tested positive for the coronavirus infection on April 14. A total of 89 families whom he delivered pizza to have been put under home quarantine.

In Delhi, 68 medical staff at city hospital sent to home quarantine after a patient dies

Sixty-eight staff members including doctors and nurses of a city hospital have been sent to home quarantine after a 25-year-old pregnant woman admitted there died possibly due to coronavirus on April 16

The decision was taken by authorities at the government-run Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital (BMH), who claimed that the woman did not disclose her travel history and or her 'home-quarantine' status to the hospital authorities.
