A group of scientists in the Netherlands have developed a monoclonal antibody — a lab-created protein which is similar to the one that occurs naturally to fight infection in the human body — that can block the novel coronavirus infection, according to Bloomberg.

Though in an early stage, the antibody might help in development of medicines to fight against Covid-19 in future. Scientists from Utrecht University in the Netherlands say there’s still a need to research on how these antibodies defeat the viruses.

When coronavirus enters the human body it unlocks the epithelial cells that guards the respiratory. Moreover, it is also able to infect the lungs through ACE2 protein. The experimental antibody, 47D11, binds the protein that helps new coronavirus get a crown-like shape and get into the body. Moreover, it also blocks the virus which causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

“Monoclonal antibodies targeting vulnerable sites on viral surface proteins are increasingly recognized as a promising class of drugs against infectious diseases and have shown therapeutic efficacy for a number of viruses,” Bernerd-Jan Bosch and , research leader, wrote.

Scientists around the world have been working round the clock to develop a vaccine against Covid-19 which has infected 3.58 million people and killed 251,510.
