Here’s how urban and rural India is spending every ₹100 they earn, as per an ICICI Direct report.

Major expenses

While urban India spends 57.96 percent on food and beverages and housing, rural India spends 54.18 percent of their money on food and beverages, which is more than half of their total income.

Transport and communication

While urban India spends 9.73 percent on transport and communication, rural India’s spending is lower at 7.6 percent.

Education

Rural India spends 3.75 percent on education, while urban India spends 5.62 percent for education.

Fuel and light

Urban India spends 5.58 percent on fuel and light but rural India has to spend a much higher fraction at 7.94 percent.

While urban India spends 5.57 percent on clothing and footwear, rural India has to spend a higher at 7.36 percent.

Health is another area where rural India spends more than urban India. While urban India spends 4.81 percent on healthcare, rural India spends 6.83 percent of their income.

Household goods and services

The expenditure on household goods and services is similar. While urban India spends 3.87 percent, rural India spends 3.46 percent of their income on this.

Urban India spends 3.47 percent of their income on personal care, while rural India spends 4.25 percent of their income on this.

While urban India spends 2 percent of their income on recreation and amusement, rural India is more conservative and spends 1.37 percent of their income on this.
