India is inviting retired medical professionals to join the 'force' against coronavirus

The coronavirus pandemic is spreading at a fast pace and positive cases are nearing the 2000 mark. To reinforce the fight against it, Indian government is asking retired medical professionals to come back to work.

During a press briefing, Luv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Health Ministry informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his call with Chief Ministers of all states has requested them to invite all retired medical professionals to join the force against coronavirus.

This would include retired professionals from the government sector as well as private sector. They also invited NSS volunteers, community-based NGOs, NCC volunteers to create a force on ground.

Aggarwal also said that healthcare human resource upgrade has been requested, which also includes online training of frontline workers. The number of confirmed cases in India has now shot up to 1965, leaving 151 recovered and 50 dead.

The focus of the government remains on testing, isolation and providing quarantine facilities for those who need it. State governments assured that psychosocial support will be provided at relief camps. The supply of essential items will also continue without any glitches, they said.

During the call with chief ministers, the Prime Minister also discussed dedicated Covid-19 hospitals, ICU beds, quarantine facilities and more. Modi also told the leaders of the state that seeing how the number of cases are increasing every day, the war against coronavirus has just started and every government employee should be alert as a soldier right now.

Modi also requested all religious groups to come together in spirit and follow social distancing. “It is our collective mission to win this war,” he said.
