In a significant development, India has overtaken countries like Japan and Russia to secure its place as the third-largest power in the Asia Power Index, after the US and China, according to a recent announcement by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in the geopolitical landscape of the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting India's growing influence and power.

The Asia Power Index, launched by the Lowy Institute in 2018, assesses 27 countries across the Asia-Pacific region based on their ability to shape and respond to geopolitical challenges within Asia. The index uses eight core measures, including Economic Capability, Military Capability, and Diplomatic Influence, to evaluate each country's power. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated that India's dynamic growth, expanding economy and youthful population have propelled it to this new height, reflecting its rising stature in the region.

A post-pandemic economic comeback

India’s rise in the 2024 edition of the Asia Power Index is a testament to its remarkable post-pandemic recovery. The country saw a substantial 4.2-point increase in Economic Capability, fueled by its strong GDP growth. As the world's third-largest economy in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), India has demonstrated an impressive ability to bounce back from pandemic-related setbacks and solidify its economic position. This resurgence not only strengthens India's role as a regional force but also sends a clear message about its resilience and adaptability in an ever-changing global economy.

India’s future resource advantage

A key factor contributing to India's rise is its youthful demographic. While countries like China and Japan face challenges due to their ageing populations, India’s young and dynamic workforce stands out as a driving force for future growth. The country experienced an 8.2-point boost in its Future Resources score, emphasising its potential to sustain long-term economic expansion. With this demographic advantage, India is poised to maintain its momentum, fostering innovation and growth across various sectors.

Diplomatic and security influence

Beyond economics, India’s growing influence in multilateral diplomacy and regional security has also played a significant role in its ascent. Active participation in groups like the Quad and leadership in regional dialogues have cemented India's role as a key player in the Asia-Pacific. Unlike other major powers, India has managed to establish itself in regional security matters without formal military alliances, showcasing its ability to navigate complex geopolitical dynamics.

Defence agreements, such as the BrahMos missile deal with the Philippines, further underscore India’s expanding ambitions and its readiness to play a more assertive role in the region.
