Indian airlines gear up to resume domestic flights after Union civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that the domestic flights' operations will resume from May 25.

Puri in a tweet said the flights would open up in a calibrated manner and all airports and airlines are being informed to prepare for the resumption.

The ministry of civil aviation will issue a standard operating procedure (SOP) guideline for passenger movement.

On March 25, the Indian ministry of civil aviation ordered the grounding of all commercial flights in India as it was preparing to contain the virus at an early stage.

However, the ban was not applicable for cargo flights, but the airlines experienced a major cash crunch as a big chunk of the revenue comes from passenger flights.

The development comes a day after Puri in a tweet said that it is not only up to the Central government to decide on the resumption of domestic flights, as states will also have to be ready to allow civil aviation operations.

On Sunday (May 17), after the Ministry of Home Affairs decided to extend the lockdown till May 31, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had said that it would suitably inform the airlines about flights resumption in due course.

However, in the lockdown 4.0 guidelines, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that all domestic and international air travel of passengers will be prohibited, except for domestic medical services, domestic air ambulance and for security purposes.
