This day is all about celebrating the achievements of women who made history and set themselves as an example.

Here are a few of the most powerful women from India’s past and present:

Anandi Gopal Joshi — First female doctor of India

She was the first woman in India to learn and practice Western medicine. She was the first Indian woman to get a degree in medicine from the US.

Kalpana Chawla — First Indian woman to go to Space

She made history at NASA as the first female astronaut of Indian descent. She is regarded as a national hero in India.

Cornelia Sorabji — First lady advocate of India

She was the first woman to practice law in India. She received her first class degree from Bombay University in 1888.

Indira Gandhi — First female PM of India

Also known as ‘Iron lady of India’. She is the only female Prime Minister of India, so far. She served as Prime Minister from 1966-1977 and again in 1980-1984.

Kiran Bedi — First female to join Indian Police Service

She was the first woman to join Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972.

Justice M Fathima Beevi — First female Supreme Court judge

She became the first female judge to be part of the Supreme Court of India , she was appointed in 1989. She is also the first Muslim woman to be appointed to be appointed in higher judiciary.

Priya Jhingan — First lady cadet to join Indian Army

Silver Medalist and law graduate Priya joined the Indian Army in 1993.

Pratibha Patil — First female President of India

She became the first female and 12th President of India. She served as President from 2007-2012.
