Prime Minister Narendra Modi is officially extending the nationwide lockdown in India. He confirmed it in a conference call with chief ministers on Saturday afternoon.
According to a Times Now report, the lockdown will be extended by another two weeks. As per Modi’s earlier announcement, it was supposed to end by April 14. However, a two week extension would ensure that Indians stay locked inside till the end of the month.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal confirmed the news on Twitter, lauding the PM’s decision to extend lockdown.
According to reports, PM Modi has recommended three zones: red, green and yellow for lockdown depending on severity of virus spread.
According to ANI, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said that PM on video conference with CMs said that we must not compromise on lockdown and we are receiving suggestions for extending it for next 15 days. PM said in next 1-2 days Govt of India will announce guidelines for next 15 days, said Yediyurappa.
Even before this, states of Odisha and Punjab extended the lockdown till the end of the month. Many chief ministers have been asking for the same, in order to flatten the curve. In the last few weeks, the number of infections in India shot up to 7483, leaving 643 cured and 239 dead.
Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore also identified clusters where there are a large number of patients and created hundreds of containment zones across the country.
