On July 13, the residents of Paravada area in Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh rushed out of their homes at midnight after a massive fire broke out at a pharmaceutical unit in Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City in Parwada. Officials say four persons were present at the site when the fire broke and three of them came out safely while one sustained burn injuries.

The incident triggered panic among the residents in the Paravada area as it came just over a couple of months after the styrene vapour leak in the LG Polymers plant in the region.

Here’s how it happened—

A loud explosion was first heard at the Pharma City, following which there was a huge fire. The incident is said to have occurred in the Coastal Waste Management Project, a unit of Ramky Solvents, according to sources.

At least nine fire tenders were pressed into service to put out the massive blaze. However, The fire tenders could not reach closer to the scene of the disaster due to a series of explosions.

Police authorities are yet to identify The cause of the incident is not yet known, and fire and emergency services personnel could not immediately reach the spot as the blaze has engulfed the area.

A worker sustained burn injuries, while three others who were also at the unit when the incident occurred escaped to safety. He was sent to a hospital in Gajuwaka.

Huge flames could be seen from far away. Residents of some residential areas near the cluster were evacuated to safe places

The incident occurred two weeks after a gas leak at Sainor Life Sciences Private Limited in Pharma City, which claimed the lives of two people and affected four others.

The gas leak incident came close on the heels of the May 7 disaster at LG Polymers plant at Venkatapuram. Styrene gas leak from the plan had claimed the lives of 15 people and affected around 500 in the surrounding villages.
