While Chad emerged as the country with the most polluted air in the world in 2022, India has been ranked as the eighth most polluted country with a PM2.5 concentration of 53.3 micrograms per cubic metre of air.

The recommended concentration of PM2.5 particles by the World Health Organisation is 0 to 5 micrograms per cubic metre of air.

Tarakeswar in West Bengal, Digboi in Assam and Aladu in Tamil Nadu have emerged as the least polluted cities in India. Tarakeswar is the least polluted city in Central and South Asia.

Bhiwadi, a city in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, has emerged as the most polluted city in India and the third most polluted city in the world.

Delhi has emerged as India's second most polluted city and the world's fourth most polluted city.

All of the cities in the list were over ten times more polluted than the recommended limit of 5 micrograms per cubic metre of air.

Patna, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, Greater Noida, Rohtak, Meerut, and Kanpur were the prominent cities on the list.

If we looked at the top 100 polluted cities in the world in 2022, 65 cities were Indian.
