Mukesh Ambani slips in the rich list yet again — as MacKenzie Bezos takes his place

MacKenzie Bezos, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is now richer than India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani. According to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, she added $8.2 billion to her net worth on April 15 after Amazon’s shares gained 5.3% on Wall Street.

MacKenzie Bezos owns 4% stake in Amazon which she received as a part of a divorce settlement in 2019. She is now the 18th richest person in the world — pushing Ambani to the 19th rank.

The 50-year-old is Amazon’s second largest individual shareholder and second richest woman in the world. She is a novelist and also a philanthropist who pledged at least half her wealth to charity as a part of the Giving Pledge.

The spurt in her networth can be attributed to the coronavirus pandemic which forced millions of people stuck at home to shop from Amazon.

While the world’s 500 richest lost $553 billion, Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man only added to his coffers. His net worth went up by a whopping $24 billion to $138.5 billion on April 15, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Mukesh Ambani was among the many who lost billions as Indian stock markets crashed in March. According to Bloomberg, Ambani was worth $58.6 billion when the year started. However, his net worth reduced by 41% to $34.4 billion as on 19 March.

Apart from Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk added $10.4 billion to his wealth. Whereas, Zoom founder Eric Yuan added $7.4 billion to his network after his video conference app grew by a whopping 1900% as the more people work from home.
