Top 10 richest non-resident Indians in 2022
- IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022 released on 21 September lists the richest Indians under different categories based on their wealth snapshots as on 30 August 2022.
- The US is the most preferred destination for the richest NRIs, with 48 of them residing there. UAE and the UK are the next popular destinations.
- Business Insider India gives a snapshot of the top 10 richest non-resident Indians.
Vinod Shantilal Adani and family
Residing in Dubai, Vinod Shantilal Adani & Family has a wealth of ₹1.69 lakh crore. Their primary source of wealth is the Adani Group that operates several enterprises and businesses of diverse categories in India and abroad. In September 2022, the combined market capitalisation of Adani Group hit ₹22.25 lakh crore, thereby surpassing Tata Group and Reliance Industries.
SP Hinduja and family
SP Hinduja & family is second on the list. The wealth of the chairman and primary shareholder of the Hinduja Group of Companies is estimated at ₹ 1.65 lakh crore. This family resides in London. Right from the 1990s, he has been ranking among the wealthiest persons of the UK and Asia consistently. In 2017, Forbes ranked Hinduja and family 12th on the list of Asia’s richest families.
LN Mittal and family
LN Mittal and family hold the third slot on the richest NRI list with an estimated wealth of ₹1.52 lakh crore. They live in London. Way back in 2005, Forbes ranked Mittal in the third place among the world’s richest persons. Heis the chairman of ArcelorMittal and has a stake in Queens Park Rangers. In 2015, he was 55th on Forbes list of the world’s most powerful people and 6th on Forbes India’s Richest List 2021.
Jay Chaudhry
With his ₹ 70,000 crore wealth, Jay Chaudhry figures fourth on the list. He resides in San Jose. The Indian – American billionaire businessman is the founder and CEO of Zscaler. Zscaler went public in 2018 and this made Chaudhry a billionaire. Chaudhry’s name figured in the 2021 Forbes list of 400 richest people in the US. In this list, he occupied the 45th position.
Anil Agarwal and family
The fifth richest NRI as per the Hurun list is Anil Agarwal and family. Residing in London, their estimated wealth is ₹ 58,600 crore. Anil Agarwal is the chairman and founder of Vedanta Resources. Through Volcan investments, he controls Vedanta Resources and he has 100% stake in this business. Vedanta Resources is headquartered in London and is a conglomerate of globally diversified natural resources.
Yusuff Ali MA
With his estimated wealth of ₹ 54,700 crore, Abu-Dhabi based Yusuff Ali MA is sixth on the list of wealthiest NRIs in 2022. The Indian entrepreneur is the chairman and managing director of Lulu Group International. The company owns the Lulu Hypermarket chain that is spread around the world. Notably, the Lulu Group has employed the largest number of Indians outside of the country. The company’s operations are spread across three continents.
Shapoor Pallonji Mistry
Shapoor Pallonji Mistry is seventh on the list with an estimated wealth of ₹ 54,300 crore. Mistry, who passed away in June this year was the chairman of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. The family’s biggest asset is its stake in Tata Sons, the holding outfit of the Tata Group.
Sri Prakash Lohia
Sri Prakash Lohia, residing in London is the founder and chairman of Indorama Corporation. He has a wealth of ₹ 48,600 crore. Indorama Corporation is a petrochemical and textile company with diversified interests. Sri Prakash Lohia is ranked 403rd on Forbes World’s Billionaires List 2022 and was ranked 4th richest in Indonesia in 2021 by Forbes.
Rakesh Gangwal and family
Rakesh Gangwal and family reside in Mclean and have an estimated wealth of ₹ 29,400 crore. The Indian – American billionaire entrepreneur is the co-founder of IndiGo airline in which he has 37% stake today. In April 2022, Gangwal gave away ₹100 crore to IIT-Kanpur to set up a school of medical sciences and technology. In 2021, he was on the Forbes 400 list.
Vivek Chaand Sehgal and family
The wealth of Vivek Chaand Sehgal and family is estimated at ₹ 26,300 crore and puts them in tenth place on the list of richest NRIs. The family resides in Melbourne. The Indo-Australian billionaire entrepreneur is the co-founder of the auto parts manufacturer Samvardhana Motherson International Group. Partnering with Sumitomo Electric, the company acquired eleven companies in twelve years.
