Indians now will be able to find it easy to work in the UK. Priti Patel, Britain’s home secretary will launch a new points-based immigration system today which will bring home “the brightest and the best” from around the globe, including India.

This the country’s biggest immigration in the last 50 years. Last year, Patel brought back in the post-study work visa after Theresa May scrapped it in 2012 .

“We are ending free movement, taking back control of our borders and delivering on the people’s priorities by introducing a new UK points-based immigration system, which will bring overall migration numbers down. We will attract the brightest and the best from around the globe, boosting the economy and our communities, and unleash this country’s full potential,” said Priti Patel, Britain’s home secretary.

Scientists, engineers and academics

The new point-based system will be similar to Canada’s current immigration policies and will be effective from 1 January 2021. Now that the UK finally moved out of the European Union, this new system will treat EU and non-EU citizens equally.

The new PBS will have specific criteria that need to be met before some apply for it. This includes specific job skills, and spoken English abilities. However, all applicants will be required to have a job offer in line with the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) recommendations.

Good news for students

The new PBS will also help those with student visas.

The growing number of Indian students in the UK will also find it easier to work there. Nearly 22,000 Indians received student visas for the year ending June 2019, which is 15,000 more than the previous year.

According to the Times Higher Education (THE), the UK is home to three of the top 10 universities across the globe including the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge and Imperial College, London.

These aspirants however will need to have an offer from an approved educational institution. This is apart from regular requirements that prove that they can support themselves financially and have achieved a desired level in the English test.
