Huge flames on the surface of the river can be seen in a video that went viral.

“Fire and emergency service personnel arrived on the spot and took the fire under control. Earlier, a massive fire broke out on Burhi Dihing river in Upper Assam. According to residents of nearby villages, the fire took place because of the lackadaisical attitude of Oil India authorities,” reported a local journalist from Guwahati.

As of now, there are no reports of casualties or injuries. However, the fire has deteriorated the local ecology, affecting communities close by.

Oil India claims to have sent a team of experts to stop contamination across the river. Company sources say the crude oil flow to the pump tank was blocked. After which, pressure built in the pipe which might have led to a puncture.

The locals however believe that this a side-effect of crude oil theft which takes place on the oil pipeline. The reports also said that officers did not take action immediately, even after they’ve alerted them.

Further, they say such incidents are common in the area. In September 2014, a massive fire broke out at two wells of Oil India in Duliajan. Though there was no loss of life, it took seven hours for fire officials to control the fire.
