Every year, the Ministry of Urban Development and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) release a list under Swachh Survekshan. It is a Government of India ranking exercise that evaluates urban and rural areas on cleanliness and sanitation initiatives. This list is based on the data published in the year 2023.

Dominating the list we have the state of Maharashtra as the cleanest state in India. Its rank is a direct result of its advanced waste segregation and recycling programmes.

Madhya Pradesh has earned recognition as the 2nd cleanest state in India, showcasing its commitment to improving its sanitation and waste management.

Chhattisgarh ranks as India's 3rd cleanest state due to its effective waste management practices, sanitation programs, and community engagement in cleanliness drives.

Odisha is the 4th cleanest state in India, thanks to its effective waste management systems and regular public awareness campaigns that promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility.

Telangana ranks as the 5th cleanest state in India due 5-star rating for being garbage-free. Along with this, it has a number of green patches in its cities which contribute to a clean environment.

Andhra Pradesh stands out as the 6th for its effective waste management and cleanliness, earning recognition as one of the cleanest states.

Punjab’s rank as the 7th cleanest state in this list is a result of the combined efforts of both the state government initiatives and public awareness campaigns.

Tamil Nadu has earned special recognition for and 10th rank in this list because of its unique and systematic approach to cleanliness. It has some of the most comprehensive policies related to sanitation.
